Eating with the seasons: dietary spring cleaning

Spring ushers in new energy and a chance to cleanse what was stored during the winter months.  During winter, our lifestyles are more sedentary and food seems to be at the center of just about every activity.  From the holiday season to Super Bowl Sunday to March Madness, we are more likely to be sitting, eating, and watching something on TV. Spring, however, provides opportunities for a more active lifestyle. Outside runs, gatherings with friends in the park, walks through flower gardens.

Spring’s arrival also means that it’s time to take another look at what’s on our plate. Our body responds differently to various foods based upon the time of year. From mid-March to mid-June, we have the perfect opportunity to do a bit of dietary Spring cleaning.

Spring Recommendations*

Bright colors, warmer temperatures, and rain showers experienced during Spring may cause your body to crave foods that provide natural detoxification. At this point during the year, the body wants to cleanse all that was stored up during the winter. Additionally, higher levels of histamine are present, leading to increased allergy symptoms. Therefore, it may also be time to consume foods that can help to naturally alleviate those symptoms.

When it comes to Spring cleaning, it’s not just about what’s in your closet. By adjusting your dietary choices to what’s in season, you’re creating a healthy internal environment. Shop locally to preserve nutritional value. Research farmer’s markets in your area and take a trip as part of your Spring routine. Remaining in rhythm with the season provides nourishment for both your mind and body while leading to a more balanced lifestyle overall.
